Aft Bulkhead

I am installing an aft bulkhead--a cofferdam actually to section off the rudder compartment from the middle of the boat.  The idea is, if the rudder is damaged, or the back of the boat is holed in a collision ECHO won't sink.  I plan to do something similar in the front in the spring.

The first picture shows the steering gear frame and a few sea-cocks for the forward cockpit drains.  These are below the waterline, hence the ball valves to close them off.  I found ice in one of them, and that hose was damaged.

There I am in the second picture with the bulkhead test fitted.  I had to make it in two pieces to fit it into the boat.  I expect it will take more than a few days to get it installed, but only an hour or two on each of those days.  The most difficult part will be tabbing in the other side.  I'll also need to install bulkhead pipe fittings to pass three 1.5" bilge pump lines and one 3" exhaust hose through the bottom of this.  I'll need to install one or two bilge pumps on the other side.

The best part of finishing this task, is I'll be able to install a new fuel tank.  After that I can start putting the aft staterooms back together.

Other good news:  I found a cheap source of marine plywood locally.
